IMD Issues Red Alert for Karnataka as Cyclone Asna Threatens, Heavy Rains Expected in Gujarat

Cyclone Asna has created significant concerns in coastal regions of India, particularly in Karnataka and Gujarat. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a 'red alert' for coastal Karnataka due to the impending threat from this rare cyclone, which is expected to bring heavy rainfall and strong winds. This storm, named Cyclone Asna by Pakistan, is particularly unusual for this time of year, with only three similar cyclones recorded over the Arabian Sea in August between 1891 and 2023.

In Gujarat, the situation has been severe, with heavy rainfall over the past few days leading to the tragic loss of 26 lives and the evacuation of over 18,000 people. Rescue operations have been ongoing, with around 1,200 individuals rescued from flood-affected areas. While the intensity of rainfall has decreased in most parts of Gujarat, significant waterlogging and damage have been reported due to overflowing rivers, especially in the Saurashtra-Kutch region.

The cyclone is projected to move from Gujarat into the Arabian Sea and head towards Oman, continuing its unusual trajectory. The authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and residents in affected areas are being advised to stay alert and follow safety guidelines.
