Puja Tomar scripts history, becomes first Indian to win a bout in UFC

India's Puja Tomar made history by becoming the nation's first mixed martial arts champion and winning a match in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in UFC Louisville. In Saturday's strawweight (52kg) match, rookie Tomar narrowly defeated Brazil's Rayanne dos Santos by split decision, 30–27, 27–30, 29–28.

"This victory is not mine. This triumph is dedicated to all Indian supporters and fighters. Previously, the general consensus was that Indian fighters were mobile. "After winning, all I wanted to do was prove to the world that Indian fighters are not weaklings," Tomar stated on Sony Sport Network.

With her contract inked with the UFC in October of last year, the 30-year-old known as "cyclone" became the first Indian woman to compete in the largest Mixed Martial Arts promotion.

Along with Arjan Singh Bhullar, who is based in Canada, Anshul Jubli and Bharat Kandare have represented India internationally in the UFC. "I feel fantastic. I had gone from home believing that I would prevail. I'm here and the crowd is applauding me because I've worked extremely hard. I triumphed because I had a lot of strength and motivation."

Tomar, a five-time national wushu champion with a background in karate and taekwondo, was born in the Budhana hamlet of Muzaffarnagar, Uttar Pradesh. I attacked a lot, knowing that I would win. However, I was unable to give it everything I had. In the second round, I sensed pressure. I have a lot of talents to work on, including takedowns.

"My mother has battled the world for me; this victory is for her. My MMA journey was not an easy one. Thus, this victory is hers." She has participated in many competitions, such as Matrix Fight Night, where she twice took home the straw-weight crown.

MMA is a full-contact combat sport that combines tactics from several combat sports around the world. It is centered on striking, grappling, and ground fighting. An American mixed martial arts promotion organization is called Ultimate Fighting Championship.
